Women run for social change in Casablanca

May 20, 2008

Last weekend more than 27,000 women and girls took over the streets of Casablanca to run in the 10th edition of the ‘Course Feminine’, a 10k organized by Moroccan Olympic Champion Nawal El Moutawakel. Among the women were over 30 NGO representatives from the Middle East, North Africa and Afghanistan who also attended a two-day conference following the race, on Gender Equity in Sport for Social Change.Women Win was one of the organizing parties of the conference.
The ‘Course Feminine’ was a unique and symbolic way to start the conference. Vera Pauw, coach of the the Dutch national female football team and board member of Women Win, joined the race for the first time. “What I learned this week is that by doing sports, whether it's running, football or hip hop dancing, women and girls learn how to claim more space for themselves, physically as well as emotionally,” Pauw states.
