Empodera is a non-profit organisation based in Rio de Janeiro which was founded in 2017 by two young women with 10 years of collective experience in gender and sport. Empodera (‘Empower’ in English) was created to address a large gap in the way sport for development organisations in Brazil approach gender equity through sport. The organisation supports the delivery of the “One Win Leads to Another” (OWLA) programme funded by the International Olympic Committee and UN Women. The OWLA programme builds the leadership skills of adolescent girls in Rio de Janeiro through quality sport training, creates safe spaces for girls and provide them with the tools and knowledge to disrupt social barriers and address violence.
In addition to the delivery of the OWLA programme, Empodera also supports organisations to incorporate and improve the delivery of programmes that promote gender equity and empower adolescent girls through a rights-based approach. In partnership with Women Win, Empodera is positioning itself as a national “Center of Excellence” (CoE) for sport and gender in Brazil, with the aim of transforming how the sport for development sector addresses gender equity.
