Sports and Leadership Training (SALT) Academy is a Cambodian organisation that seeks to empower girls and develop young leaders through a sustainable community-based football league which incorporates life skills lessons. In the Cambodian provinces of Battambang, Pailin and Poipet SALT reaches over 3,000 youth and adults.
Vocational training is core to SALT’s work and vision. Through the “Mighty Girls” programme SALT uses the power of sport to prevent trafficking not only by offering girls a safe space but also by investing in their education and by providing opportunities for them to develop leadership skills. Leadership, life skills development and financial literacy training includes participation in the Goal Programme. After her training, a Mighty Girl becomes a mentor and a coach for the new girls and boys joining the programme. The Mighty Girls play in the boys’ division of SALT league and in 2011 they formed the core of the first-ever Cambodian Women’s National Team.
