Journey to Safe Spaces
Peninah Nthenya Musyimi is the Founder of Safe Spaces - a girls' sport organization in the Eastlands of Nairobi, Kenya. In the slums of Nairobi, Safe Spaces offers basketball, yoga, dance and artistic expression opportunities for girls living in extreme poverty. The emphasis of this program is on making sure participants feel secure in their play and are able to move freely - a new feeling for many of the girls this program serves. Peninah tells her story of how she used her determination and basketball as a way out of the slum, and how she's now helping other girls do the same.
